| PTSD Awareness Day, observed on June 27, was established in 2010 by the U.S. Senate to honor Staff Sergeant Joe Biel. Biel, a member of the North Dakota National Guard, died by suicide in 2007 after facing post-traumatic stress disorder following his service in Iraq. His birthday was chosen as the date for this observance.
In 2014, the U.S. Senate expanded the recognition by officially designating the entire month of June as National PTSD Awareness Month. Since then, the observance has been recognized every year by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and many other organizations.
