250 years ago—not 25 miles from Skippack—in the well-known old city of Philadelphia, at the TunTavern, the United States Marines were formed to augment the Navy's mission, creating a fighting force that was "born out of necessity for a versatile, expeditionary force that could operate seamlessly between sea and land—a concept that remains central to the Corps' identity today as the 'first to fight.'" Veterans from all branches have made large contributions to the fire service as their "second service".

Currently, the Tun Legacy Foundation is trying to recreate the Tun Tavern as close as possible to its original location. The tavern was also the birthplace of the Continental Navy and a founding & gathering place for several well-known fraternal and civic organizations. Check them out at thetun.org.
