On November 22, 1976 at 4:30 in the morning, Skippack Fire Company was dispatched to what would become the largest structure fire in township history. A fire in one of the Palmer Products buildings on Lucon Road was burning out of control when firefighters arrived. Because there was no water available in the immediate area, tanker trucks were used to shuttle water from the Skippack Creek, nearly two miles away, to the fire scene. Apparatus and manpower from four fire companies assisted in fighting the fire and an additional 11 tanker trucks were utilized to shuttle the water. The building was a total loss resulting in $400,000 in damages (equivalent to approximately $2.2 million in today's dollars).
On November 29th of that same year, an explosion in the dust hopper at Palmer Products resulted in burns to a Palmer Products employee, and to two Skippack firefighters.
