Traditionally many people spend Martin Luther King Day doing volunteer work, but members of Skippack Fire Company have dedicated their daily lives to service.
What is the significance of Skippack being a volunteer fire company? • Membership is open to anyone including people who would like to be firefighters and rescue specialists, fire police or administrative members. • In PA approximately 90% of the 2462 fire companies are volunteer • State fire officials estimate that volunteer fire companies save communities about $10 billion each year, or about $4.5 million for each community • Did you know that there are currently about 37,000 volunteer emergency responders in PA, which is a large drop from the 300,000 in the 1970s, which is not offset by the increase in paid firefighters that are found in larger communities like Philadelphia, Montgomery and Upper Providence.
