Woods Fire Assist

Skippack Fire Company was dispatched to assist Station 87, Upper Frederick Fire Company on a large woods fire with structure exposures Monday afternoon.

The initial call for service for Station 87 came in at 14:54 from a UPS driver reporting a brush fire some 50 yards from a residence. Chief 87 arrived on scene and reported a 50 x 200 area initially on fire. With the initial size of the incident and the fire moving fast (due to dry conditions) additional companies were requested to assist.

Station 86 was dispatched at 15:25 and brought Deputy, Squad (with the Assistant and Battalion Chief’s), Tanker, Special Service (with the Lieutenant) and Utility 86 to the scene. Crews assisted with fire containment and suppression. 86 crews operated on scene until 18:19.

Given our lack of snow this year and fairly nice February weather, brush fire season has started early in our region. The top layer of fine/dead/dry fuels will readily burn and with the low humidity and light winds...any fire will spread rapidly.
