remembers and honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. So as we enter the unofficial start of summer we ask that you recall the Holiday's origin, and take a moment to reflect and honor. #MemorialDay #SkippackFire #HonorTheFallen #LastFullMeasure #RememberandHonor
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was first officially observed in the United States in 1868. It was established by a veterans’ organization, to honor soldiers who died in the Civil War (1861–1865) by decorating their graves. The date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom nationwide.
After World War I, the holiday expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in any war. Originally the 30th of May, in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, creating a long weekend.
Flag Etiquette: Flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise to noon, then raised to full staff, symbolizing mourning and resolve. If flown from a vertical surface, a black mourning ribbon is afixed. |
